Liner Notes
The Monterey Jazz Festival was established in
1958 by impressario Jimmy Lyons who has hosted an enormous
amount of music at this idyllic location. Against this beautiful
seaside setting in Northern California, one spends a pleasant
weekend listening to some of the giants of music.
1975 was no exception. The accent has
always been on variety and this program documents the special
atmosphere of that year. Featured here is a host of
performers who are inspired by the company of other fine
musicians and the pleasant surroundings. You will see the
haunting lyricism of both Bill Evans and Paul Desmond, fine
blues singing by Bobby Blue Bland, the spirited bop of Dizzy
Gillespie accompanied by Cal Tjader, the very interesting
Toshiko Akiyoshi Big Band featuring Clark Terry, the rocking
rhythm and blues of Etta James, the delicate swing of Svend
Asmussen and a host of other superb musicians.
